It is indeed a great news for the supporters and promoters of peace and non-violence around the globe.

The United Nations General Assembly has decided to declare the birth anniversary of the apostle of non-violence Mahatma Gandhi as 'International Day of Non-Violence'. Every year October 2 will be celebrated as the 'International Day of Non-Violence' in recognition of his role as a promoter of non-violence and peace all-over the world.

The resolution reaffirming the universal relevance of non-violence was initiated by India in UN General Assembly. The same was co-sponsored by more than 120 members of the Assembly. It is adopted unanimously on Friday June 15, 2007.

The proposal is co-sponsored by most major countries including Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bhutan are among the sponsors from the the Indian subcontinent.

The language of the resolution says that "The Assembly decides, with effect from the 62nd session of the General Assembly and guided by the Charter of the United Nations, to observe the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2 each year, with the International day being brought to the attention of all people for its celebration and observance on this date."
